Inbetween days

June 24, 2010

An edit of some scraps from two sessions, one shot with a Canon 5d mark ii, and the other with a 7d. All the info on lenses/workflow can be found in the description on vimeo.

A little test to see how the 5d handles shooting a poorly lit venue, just some raw video saved for the web. I shot this at ISO 1000 from memory, and am really happy with the results. This is also just using the inbuilt mic, which id never use for more serious work. Another thing worth noting is the ‘superflat’ picture profile i used to shoot this with. Check out the below clip for some more info about this.

Also check out the new MIA music video HERE.. pretty insane concept.

The best

Trailer for a bodyboarding film I have seen in a long time. Possibly ever? Small details such as audio make such a big difference to the impact of the images. Cant wait to check out what Mitch has done with this film..

glidecam

March 23, 2010

Stumbled across this cool video shot with a 5d mark ii, and a glidecam 2000. Pretty refreshing to see skating(well.. in this case rollerblading) follow shots that arent done using the same vx2000/death lens, 4:3 piece of junk youve seen in every skateboarding video for the last 10 years. The glidecam 2000 used to keep the shots stable, and give that floating camera effect you can see in this clip, clocks in at around the US$500 mark, and is a piece of gear im going to try my hardest to invest in this year. Combined with a L series canon IS lens, the results you can achieve with this setup would be pretty amazing with a bit of practice.

Getting tricky

March 11, 2010

Bodyboarding needs to step it up in 2010. Biggest/Heaviest wave award, Best air, Best new move, Tow invitational, Wedge invitational. Anything to put progressive Bodyboarding in the spotlight. Below are two clips from the surfing and skateboarding world, that show what a little bit of sponsorship dollar can help achieve.

updates

March 4, 2010

Can now officially say that the below dvd ive been working on is done, so now begins sponsorship proposals, organisng premiere’s, marketing and duplication. Sounds like a lot, but it should be fairly easily compared to the hours staring at a final cut pro, compressor, and dvd studio pro screen lately. Below are some cool recent happenings in the world of online video. The first is the winner of the first round of Canon’s ‘Beyond the still’ SLR video comp. The second you would have had to of been under a rock not to of seen re-blogging around, some 1000fps shots of quicksilvers team in mexico and tahiti. Incase you dont check it already, mitchrawlins.com has had some amazing updates of late, in particular two clips so far from the Hawaii season, and boompodcast.com has just uploaded a ripping clip of novy. 5dmarkii/HVX/gopro.. Chad has invested in some quality gear, and its paying off.

Follow the progress as I finish editing, and working on marketing, release, distribution etc for the long overdue boog flick myself and some mates have been working on titled ‘Children of the foam’. To cut a long story short as to why this has taken so long, they main man who was in charge of getting Foam children up and going as a clothing/bodyboarding label, as well as directing and producing the dvd, flew to Europe to take on some work for a Snowboarding film producer, and when the time came to come back to Aus, was offered a further 2 year contract that was simply too good too refuse. This obviously leaves no time to start a bodyboarding label, so in the last few weeks my good Yamba friend Luke Morgan(pictured below), has taken over the reigns, and will be starting the company from scratch over the coming months, with a clothing line, and the soon to be released dvd I spoke of (my department), which is very close to completion. We are hoping to follow this up with a 2nd film that as of this week is already being shot for. Over the coming month I will be putting the final touches on the film, and blogging regularly. Going to try and make this blog as interesting and regular as possible, and will focus as much on the film side of things as possible. Below are some frames, and another link to the blog. Please take the time to check it out, scroll back through the pages, and tell your friends.

Men in the sea

January 11, 2010

Sorry for the lack of updates, christmas and new years flew and delivered terrible waves as per usual. Getting amped on winter and in the process of organising a few projects for 2010. One in particular I plan on going all out on, its a pretty ridiculous opportunity, and the first prize is insane.

Apart from that, im finally in the process of organising the ‘Children of the Foam’ DVD for release, have got the hard drive back in my hands after completing the edit over a year ago now, and am in the process of working on sponsorship and distribution proposals, as well as putting some finishing touches on the DVD, which has been put behing schedule by a few weeks due to me accidentally wiping some of the data haha, and the backup being located in Europe. Pretty excited with how its all turned out, stay posted in the coming weeks for a new blog site with frames, a new teaser, list of sections, art, and updates on when it will drop.

In the meantime, here are some clips ive been enjoying.

(amazing EX1 bodyboarding footage)

(Jamie O’brien Teaser, Some of which is shot by Vincent Laforett on the 5d mark ii and Red One)

(trailer for Tayler Steele’s flick on Rob Machodo drifting through Indonesia. Shot entirely on The Red one, got this movie for christmas, enjoyed it)

So you know

2010 is the year of the HD SLR.

Video Capabilities will be improved and cameras made with video functionality in mind will be refined and released. Investing in glass and a 5d mark ii at the end of last year was the best investment on film equipment ive ever made. Already accesories made specifically for the 5 and 7d are coming down in price, and becoming more readily available such as compact Dolly’s, Steadycam rigs, Matte Boxes, Follow Focus setups, viewfinders, external battery powered LCDs, filters, water housings, etc, etc. Growing up, I cant recall ever seeing one of these devices being used in a bodyboarding film (excluding water housings and viewfinders of course), and now that this technology is making this gear more affordable im pretty excited to see some of this gear being used. These cinematic tools that help immerge the viewer in the world of the feature films we’re so used to, have the potential to do wanders for Bodyboarding and surfing flicks. Whilst on the topic, props must go out the Chad Waldron for his use of solid 720p 50 frame and 5d mark ii lifestyle footage in the recent Winny mini series. The results where great, just a shame that the end destination was a computer screen and not a cinema! If you havent already, and are as interested in this technology as I am, bookmark and stay posted to the following sites:
